The southern direction rarely comes up when people talk about getting out of Gdańsk Airport, yet it is one of the busier axes in the region. Tczew sits roughly 45 km from the terminal, Starogard Gdański about 60 km, and between and around them stretches Kociewie: Pelplin, Swarożyn, Subkowy, Skarszewy and a dozen smaller towns that you somehow have to reach once you walk out of the arrivals hall.

Passengers on this route fall into roughly three groups. The first is people coming home after working abroad or after a holiday, who care about comfort, a predictable fare and not dragging suitcases across a station. The second is business travel, because the area around Tczew and Starogard hosts a good number of manufacturing plants and logistics companies that host guests from abroad. The third is family visits, weddings and celebrations, where the transfer is usually booked by someone in Poland for relatives flying in.

The train looks reasonable on paper, since Tczew is an important railway junction, but from the airport you first have to reach Gdańsk Główny station, buy a ticket, wait for a connection, and then still take a cab to the right address. For Starogard there are fewer convenient departures during the day. A transfer collapses all of that into one stage: the driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you to the door. Gdańsk Airport lies in the western part of the city, so a journey south starts on the Tri-City bypass. The car joins it right by the terminal, heads south towards the Gdańsk Południe junction, and from there the road becomes the S7 expressway and then the A1 motorway. It is the same corridor used for Toruń and Warsaw, except that a Kociewie transfer leaves it far earlier.

For Tczew the exit comes near the Stanisławie or Swarożyn junction, depending on which part of town your address is in. For Starogard Gdański you stay on the motorway a little longer, then drop onto national road 22, the old route locals still call the Berlinka, which runs straight into the town centre. In both cases more than three quarters of the drive is grade-separated road with no traffic lights and no crawling through small villages.

Closest to the airport is Pruszcz Gdański, then Tczew, and from the Kociewie junctions traffic also branches towards Malbork on the far side of the Vistula. The drive from Gdańsk Airport to Tczew usually takes about 45 min over roughly 45 km. Starogard Gdański, at around 60 km, realistically needs 60 to 75 min. These are indicative figures for normal conditions, and the gap between them comes less from distance than from the final stretch: the last part of the Starogard run is a national road, where the pace is lower than on the motorway.

Compared with public transport, a transfer wins mainly by removing the intermediate stages. You do not add time for getting from the airport to Gdańsk Główny, waiting for a train, and then a taxi from the station in Tczew or Starogard to the actual address. A transfer from Gdańsk Airport to Tczew starts at 250 PLN (approx. 62 EUR) per car for up to three passengers, and to Starogard Gdański at 300 PLN (approx. 75 EUR). The amount is fixed, agreed before the ride on the basis of the route, and it does not rise with traffic, the time of day, weekends or a delayed flight. Tczew is a town on the Vistula with one of the most recognisable pieces of industrial heritage in Poland: the Tczew bridges. The nineteenth-century road bridge was in its day among the longest crossings in Europe, and the span of its lattice trusses is still impressive. Next to it the Vistula Museum tells the story of river shipping, and the old town above the valley makes for a calm walk if you have a couple of spare hours. For passengers there is a practical detail too: the town sits right by a motorway junction, so addresses on its eastern side are reached faster than a map would suggest.

Starogard Gdański is the unofficial capital of Kociewie and has a different character: surviving fragments of medieval town walls, a broad market square with the town hall, and industrial traditions going back to the nineteenth century. It is a good base for exploring the region, with Pelplin and its former Cistercian cathedral close by, along with Skarszewy and the lakes at the edge of the Tuchola Forest.
