Gdańsk Airport Taxi to Olsztyn & the Masurian Lakes: Route, Time and Price from 920 PLN

For many travellers heading to Warmia and the Masurian Lake District, Gdańsk Airport is the most practical gateway: lots of flights, including from the UK, Scandinavia and Germany. The tricky part starts after landing, because Olsztyn is about 150 km away and the lakes are further still. Here is how a transfer from Gdańsk Airport to Olsztyn and Masuria works, how long it takes, what it costs and when it beats the train.

Flying into Gdańsk, heading to Masuria?
Send us your flight number and destination address. We'll meet you in the arrivals hall and drive you to your door in Olsztyn (from 920 PLN per car) or on to the lakes, at a fixed price confirmed before the ride.
1) Why fly into Gdańsk for Masuria

Warmia and Masuria do have their own airport in Szymany, but it offers only a handful of routes, many of them seasonal. That's why most people flying in from abroad for a lake holiday, a family visit in Olsztyn or a sailing week on the Great Masurian Lakes land in either Gdańsk or Warsaw. From Gdańsk you are noticeably closer to Olsztyn, Ostróda and the western part of the region, and there are plenty of flights throughout the day, so it's easier to match your arrival to your plans.

The catch: there is no direct rail link from Gdańsk Airport to Olsztyn. To go by train you first need to reach the station in Gdańsk or Gdynia, then change to a long-distance or regional service. After a flight, with suitcases and children, that is usually the most tiring part of the whole trip. A door-to-door transfer turns it into a single ride: walk out of arrivals, get in, and get out at your accommodation.

We cover long-distance rides in general, including Malbork and Toruń, in our guide Gdańsk Airport taxi to Malbork, Toruń and Olsztyn. This article focuses only on the Warmia and Masuria direction: Olsztyn itself and the lakeside towns that are more than two hours from the airport.

2) The route to Olsztyn: S7, Elbląg, Ostróda

From the airport we join the Tricity Bypass and then the S7 expressway towards Elbląg. It's the quickest and most predictable option: a dual carriageway across the flat Żuławy delta, bypassing Elbląg and continuing towards Ostróda. The last stretch into Olsztyn depends on your exact address and the traffic that day. The whole route is about 150 km and usually takes around 2 hours.

Distance

Roughly 150 km from the airport to central Olsztyn. Addresses on the outskirts, such as Dywity, Stawiguda or by Lake Ukiel, may add a few kilometres.

Journey time

Usually about 2 hours. On Friday afternoons in July and August, when half of Pomerania drives to the lakes, allow extra time around Elbląg and Ostróda.

Breaks on the way

There are service stations with toilets and coffee along the route. A short stop on request is no problem, especially when travelling with children.

Evening and night arrivals mean quiet roads, and the drive can even be quicker than during the day. There is no night or weekend surcharge either: the price for the route is the same at any hour. Read more in night transfer from Gdańsk Airport.

3) Price to Olsztyn and what it includes

A transfer from Gdańsk Airport to Olsztyn costs from 920 PLN for the whole car. It's a fixed price: agreed when you book and unaffected by traffic, diversions or the time of day. There's no meter, so you don't need to worry if the S7 narrows for roadworks or your plane lands at midnight.

From Gdańsk Airport to Distance (approx.) Time (approx.) Price per car
Elbląg approx. 80 km approx. 1 h from 390 PLN
Olsztyn approx. 150 km approx. 2 h from 920 PLN
Ostróda, Iława, Olsztynek depends on address approx. 1.5 to 2 h individual quote
Mrągowo, Mikołajki, Giżycko depends on address approx. 3 to 4 h individual quote

The price includes:

  • ✓Meet and greet in the arrivals hall and help with your luggage.
  • ✓Flight monitoring and up to 60 minutes of waiting after the actual landing.
  • ✓Large luggage, including suitcases and sailing bags, within the car's capacity.
  • ✓No night, weekend or public holiday surcharges.
  • ✓Payment in cash, by card, BLIK or bank transfer, with a VAT invoice if needed.

Optional extras are a child seat or booster (+30 PLN each) and an extra stop on the way (+30 PLN), for example to collect the keys to your cabin or do some shopping before you arrive. The base price covers a car for up to 3 passengers; larger groups travel by van, quoted individually, as explained in group airport transfer in Gdańsk. Current prices for all routes are on our transfer prices page, and route details on Gdańsk Airport to Olsztyn.

4) On to the lakes: Mrągowo, Mikołajki, Giżycko

For many passengers Olsztyn isn't the destination, just a point on the map. The real goal is a guesthouse on Lake Tałty, the marina in Mikołajki, a resort near Mrągowo or a lake cabin outside Giżycko. Your transfer doesn't have to end in the city: give us the exact address and we'll quote the ride right to the door. On the longer lake routes the price depends on the specific village and the access road, so we always confirm it individually before booking rather than guessing.

Ostróda and Iława

The western part of the region, with Lake Jeziorak and Lake Drwęckie, is closest to Gdańsk. The drive is shorter than to Olsztyn because both towns sit near the S7.

Mrągowo and Mikołajki

The heart of the Great Masurian Lakes, popular with families and sailors. From the airport it's usually 3 to 3.5 hours, so try to land before evening or plan a break.

Giżycko and around

The furthest of the popular destinations, with a marina and the Boyen Fortress. Expect around 3.5 to 4 hours, depending on the exact address and summer traffic.

If you're staying near Gdańsk and want to see a slice of Masuria in a single day, consider a private tour with a driver. One of our day trips goes to the Wolf's Lair in Gierłoż, right in the heart of Masuria near Kętrzyn. You can read more about that day in Wolf's Lair tour from Gdańsk, and other destinations are listed on our day tours page.

5) Transfer vs train and bus

Public transport to Olsztyn does exist and will suit some travellers. It's worth being honest about the full picture though: not just the ticket price, but the time, the number of changes and what happens to your luggage along the way.

Option What the journey looks like Things to watch out for
Train with a change Airport to a station, then a train to Olsztyn At least one change with luggage, fitting the timetable, onward trip to the lake
Long-distance bus Get to the coach station, then a bus to Olsztyn Limited departures, luggage space depends on how full the bus is
Rental car Pick up at the airport and drive yourself Returning it in Gdańsk, parking at the lakes, driving after a long flight
Door-to-door transfer Met in arrivals, driven straight to your address Needs booking in advance, ideally with your flight number

For a solo traveller with a backpack the train usually wins on price. The maths changes for two or three people: the fixed price covers the whole car, so the gap per person shrinks noticeably, and you save several hours and a lot of hassle. After a late arrival the last connections may already be gone, and a night in Gdańsk just to travel on in the morning is another cost. For shorter routes we compare apps and taxis in Bolt, Uber or a private transfer.

6) Who benefits most from a transfer
  • ✓Families with children. Age-appropriate child seats, a break on the way and no train changes with a buggy.
  • ✓Sailors. Bags, gear and a week's worth of supplies travel with you, not across station platforms.
  • ✓Wedding and family celebration guests. Land, change at your accommodation and arrive on time, even as a group.
  • ✓People coming home. Many people from Warmia work abroad and fly into Gdańsk for a weekend or the holidays.
  • ✓Business travellers. A fixed price and VAT invoice make expenses simple, and you can work in the car.

7) How to book and what to remember

On the Olsztyn and Masuria route, booking ahead matters more than for a ride into central Gdańsk. The car is on the road for several hours each way, so we plan it in advance. Bookings made less than 2 hours before pickup are handled by phone or WhatsApp only.

  • ✓Give the exact address. In Masuria it determines the price and time, especially if your stay is down a gravel track.
  • ✓Add your flight number. We'll match the pickup to the actual landing, even if you're delayed.
  • ✓Tell us about luggage. A buggy, kids' bikes or sailing gear affect which car we send.
  • ✓Add the return straight away. The return ride is 10 percent off when both rides are prepaid.

On the way back, allow about 2 hours from Olsztyn and more from the lakes, plus time for check-in. How to work out your departure time is covered in when to leave for Gdańsk Airport. The booking process step by step is in how to book a Gdańsk Airport transfer, and if your flight is delayed or cancelled, see what to do after a delayed flight.

In short: from Gdańsk Airport to Olsztyn takes about 2 hours, with no changes and a fixed price from 920 PLN per car. We'll take you right to your door in Masuria and confirm the price before the ride.
FAQ
How much is a taxi from Gdańsk Airport to Olsztyn?

A transfer from Gdańsk Airport to Olsztyn costs from 920 PLN for the whole car, not per person. The price is fixed and confirmed before the ride, and it includes luggage, flight monitoring and up to 60 minutes of waiting after landing. Optional extras are a child seat (+30 PLN) or an extra stop on the way (+30 PLN).

How long does it take to drive from Gdańsk Airport to Olsztyn?

Usually about 2 hours for roughly 150 km. Most of the drive is on the S7 expressway past Elbląg towards Ostróda, then on to Olsztyn. On summer Friday afternoons or during roadworks it can take longer.

Can you take me straight to the Masurian Lakes, for example Mikołajki or Giżycko?

Yes. Olsztyn is just one option; the ride can end at your guesthouse, resort, marina or lake cabin. Places such as Mrągowo, Mikołajki, Giżycko or Ostróda are quoted individually based on the exact address, and we confirm the price before you travel.

Is the train or bus cheaper?

For one person with light luggage, public transport is usually cheaper, but you first have to get from the airport to a station, change trains and fit the timetable. For two or three people, families with children, sailors with gear or late-evening arrivals, a door-to-door transfer often makes more sense because the price covers the whole car.

Can I book a return transfer from Masuria to Gdańsk Airport?

Yes. You can add a return ride straight away in the booking form. The return ride gets 10 percent off when both rides are prepaid. We plan the pickup time around your departure with a buffer: from Olsztyn it is about 2 hours to the airport, and longer from the lakes.

What if my flight is delayed?

Add your flight number when booking. We track the flight and adjust the pickup to the actual landing time, and up to 60 minutes of waiting after landing is included. On a long route this matters even more, because you don't need to call anyone or rebook.
